A Brief History of Hearing Aids
The first hearing aids, created in the 17th century, were enormous, trumpet-shaped contraptions with a large, open piece at one end that collected sound. While these devices were helpful to some people with hearing loss, the funnels were eventually tapered down to make them portable, which, unfortunately, made them less effective.

McGuires and Foundation for Sight and Sound Mission at Montefiore Medical Center
McGuire's Hearing Aids and Audiological Services and the Foundation for Sight and Sound have teamed up to organize a hearing "mission" scheduled for July 31 at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. The Foundation for Sight and Sound is a not-for-profit established to help fund worthwhile efforts and projects that benefit individuals with auditory or visual challenges. Hearing device provider Ear Q, is also helping to sponsor the mission.

McGuire's CEO Dave Carr honored at Southampton Town Board Meeting
Dave Carr, CEO of McGuire's Hearing Aids and Audiological Services, was recently presented with a proclamation for his civic activity as a business member of Long Island's east end communities. Dave was awarded a proclamation at a town board meeting in May. Each board member joined in, reading portions of the proclamation, which outlined Dave's civic efforts.

McGuire’s Hearing Helps Raise the Walls on Habitat for Humanity Home Humanitarian Efforts Also Raises Awareness of Hearing Health
A team of hearing specialists from Long Island company McGuire’s Hearing and Audiological Services recently demonstrated that hearing care professionals do indeed make an important difference. The McGuires team joined hearing care professionals from across the country who volunteered to help construct a Habitat for Humanity home in Charlotte, NC that will benefit a deserving family. The wall-raising for the Habitat home, sponsored by leading hearing device manufacturer Oticon, Inc., took place during the annual convention of the American Audiology Association in Charlotte.

McGuire's Day of Giving
On July 28, 2007, David Carr and his team from McGuire's hosted a "Day of Giving" to spread the joy of hearing. On that day, dozens of patients received better hearing as Team McGuire's provided 100 hearing devices to deserving Long Island patients, all free of charge. While the hearing devices were provided by the Starkey Hearing Foundation, Team McGuire's donated their time and services to this important cause.

China
In January of 2005, Dave Carr and a team of hearing professionals traveled to Fuzhou Province in China to provide hearing healthcare for about 275 children. Dave and the others, who had volunteered their skills and time, joined with the international organization CompassionNet and traveled with hearing devices donated by the Starkey Hearing Foundation. Many of these young people lived in orphanages and attended schools for disabled children. It was not uncommon for parents to abandon their children and place them in government facilities if families lacked the resources to care for these children.

Day of Giving
Eight-year-old Meghan Dallas, a third grader at River Elementary School in Patchogue, NY, with congenital hearing loss, was one of 70 youngsters from Long Island and Bronx, NY, who received hearing aids during a "Day of Giving" held July 28 at the Riverhead, NY, offices of McGuire's Hearing Aids and Audiological Services. Also shown is Dave Carr, president of the five-office operation, who is counseling Meghan on the care and maintenance of her first hearing aid, a Starkey Destiny 1200 BTE. All the hearing instruments for the daylong event were donated by the Starkey Hearing Foundation. The McGuire's staff provided fitting, counseling, and audiologic services at no charge.
Misson to China
David Carr, BC-HIS, is president of the Hearing Healthcare Alliance of New York and CEO of McGuire’s Hearing Aid Service, a five-office operation in eastern Long Island and at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. In November 2004, “a time in my life when I was looking to give something back,” he says, colleagues fromOmni Hearing Systems told him they were going to China to test deaf children and they were looking for volunteers to go back to China for follow-up care.
